TechFirst! PlanetEarth Learning Community
A Unique Opportunity for First-Year Students at SUNY Cortland |
|
 |
- TechFirst! fosters a community of adventurous students who share an interest in technology and an excitment for learning.
- TechFirst! involves an integrated set of introductory courses designed to enhance each student's ability - at the beginning of his/her career - to use technology for analysis, presentation, and communication of information.
- TechFirst! is taught by committed teacher-scholars who value the opportunity to be both compassionate teachers and active researchers in their fields.
- TechFirst! provides greater and earlier opportunities for students to take part in technology-based internships and joint student-faculty research projects.
|
|
TechFirst! is not a major, but represents a way to jumpstart development of technology-based skills. All courses count as electives for any major, and GRY 125 counts towards the College's General Education requirement. The program is taught by some of SUNY Cortland's most outstanding faculty.
TechFirst! students enroll as a group in a special block of integrated courses that promote technology-based skills in the analysis, presentation, and communication of information.
These courses include:
Analysis & Presentation: CAP 100: The Digital Toolbox (3 cr. hr.)
Communication: COM 340: Small Group Communication (3 cr. hr.)
Information:
Other: COR 101: The Freshman Experience: A First Year Seminar (1 cr. hr.)
In addition, students will also enroll in an appropriate elective for a total of 16-17 credits.
|
|
| What do TechFirst! students do? |
TechFirst! students recognize that technology involves more than just fancy hardware; it represents tools by which knowledge can be analyzed, presented, and communicated.
TechFirst! students understand that the college graduate of the 21st century must be: |
- skillful in a wide range of computer applications,
- knowledgeable about global, regional, and local conditions,
- capable of analyzing information about these conditions,
- competent to demonstrate analyses using various presentation methods, and
- articulate in communicating through verbal and written expression.
|
 |
TechFirst! coursework involves assignments coordinated across courses. For example, students in the program will:
- analyze information about global issues learned in Human Geography;
- apply skills developed in Digital Toolbox to download data from the Internet, construct databases, and produce maps for presentations;
- import these graphic images into PowerPoint presentations for use in the Small Group Communication course; and
- use language and composition skills honed in special Computer Lab sections of Academic Writing.

TechFirst! is taught by committed teacher-scholars who value the opportunity to be both compassionate teachers and active researchers in their fields. |
