Welcome to
Geography at SUNY Cortland!

Students who major in Geography may choose a program leading to the award of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography or a Bachelor of Science degree in GIS. The Bachelor of Arts program in Geography includes a 13-hour foreign language requirement. The Bachelor of Science program in GIS incorporates a 13-hour sequence in computer techniques, environmental science, or demographics and business geographics in lieu of the foreign language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts.

The faculty's scholarly activity is conducted in two mutually supportive venues, traditional scholarship and a more applied scholarship that involves students in the data collecting and analysis. Within the traditional realm, department members regularly submit grant applications and receive grants; engage in research; publish abstracts, papers, and books; and participate in professional societies. In the past five years, department members published 17 papers and book chapters, delivered 32 professional presentations, and received 10 grants.

Faculty members also participate in applied scholarship that actively involves the students.
Some of these projects include:
  • Mapping of Lime Hollow Nature Center property and trail system

  • Working with proprietary data on HIV/AIDS from the Royal Thai Army and producing preliminary maps

  • Providing "Expert Witness" testimony for the Cayuga Land Claims trial

  • GIS and GPS-based field mapping for the Nature Conservancy's Malloryville Wetland Complex (w/ SUNY Cortland Geology Department)

  • Interdepartmental project which included mapping criminal incidents for the Cortland City Police Department and GPS-based mapping of the accessibility of bus schedules and routes for the Health Department (w/ Sociology Department/HUD grant)

  • Ground-truthing of soils maps and aligning data to Digital Ortho Quarter-Quad (DOQQ) photos for the Soil and Water Conservation Service
  • Students recording well locations with handheld GPS units and mapping their locations for the Health Department

  • Trail mapping at Camp Huntington (SUNY Cortland's Raquette Lake Great Camp)

  • Digital mapping of aquifer boundaries for the Cortland County Soil and Water Conservation District

Faculty also participate on a regular basis in "Scholars Day" which is designated as a day where faculty and students come together to share research and scholarly efforts. The activities faculty have undertaken range from presentation of scholarly work to overseeing sessions where students make presentations of the projects they have worked on. Students have the opportunity to see the outcome of the efforts of their fellow students, to understand the nature of research and specifically to understand the research in their particular discipline.
