Each year we offer over four hundred scholarships to our incoming and current students. By accepting the award you are becoming a part of SUNY Cortland’s history. We are incredibly lucky to have such a generous group of donors. It is their commitment to SUNY Cortland that allows us to offer this additional financial assistance in the form of scholarships above and beyond what students qualify for in traditional financial aid.
Scholarship Payment
- All scholarship funding is paid half during the fall semester and half during the spring semester.
- Renewable scholarships are those that continue to fund a student each year until they graduate as written in the students scholarship contract.
- Students who take an extended period of time to graduate will not receive additional scholarship funding.
- Due to accounting and fund investment criteria, students who graduate early will not receive the full intended amount of the scholarship and will forfeit the last payment(s).
Scholarship Maintenance
Scholarship recipients should pay close attention to their scholarship agreement and make sure they keep a copy. The intent of some scholarships is to fund the recipient longer than one year. If this is the case, there are usually criteria associated with maintaining and having the scholarship renewed each year.
Criteria Considered:
- Grade Point Average
- Major
- Community Service
Donor Recognition Banquet
Each April, the SUNY Cortland Foundation organizes a banquet to recognize the donors. Scholarship recipients are invited and encouraged to attend. The banquet gives the students an opportunity to meet, face-to-face, the person(s) responsible for their scholarship funding.
“I am truly honored to have received the Jane Doe Scholarship in education. Mrs. Doe is a wonderful woman and I am very pleased that I had the opportunity to meet and thank her in person.”

Yearly Donor Updates
Students who receive renewable scholarships will receive a donor update form during their second, third and fourth years of receiving the scholarship.
Our donors have a vested interest you, the student. They like being updated on how “their” student(s) is/are doing.
Upon receipt of this form, we ask that you fill it out return it to the Foundation Office without delay.
Get Involved!
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with to gain a better understanding of how our students, alumni and donors interconnect.
Student Alumni Association
This group focuses on school spirit initiatives and bridges the gap between students and alumni.
Dragon Dialers
This is a group of student callers who work as SUNY Cortland ambassadors to increase annual giving to The Cortland Fund. Dragon Dialers telephone alumni and friends in order to increase the number of dollars raised and the number of donors supporting The Cortland Fund. By collecting funds from alumni, parents, students and friends of the College, Dragon Dialers provide resources for cultural activities, scholarships, technological enhancements, undergraduate research and other exceptional educational experiences for SUNY Cortland students.
