How To…  E-Sign Your Plus Master Promissory Note (MPN)

E-Signing Your PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN)

The following instructions will guide you through the PLUS e-Sign process.  It’s important to note that you can “opt out” at any point during the e-Sign process by clicking on Exit.  We estimate that it will take approximately 30 minutes to read through the certification, then complete and electronically sign the promissory note.  Please allow yourself enough time to complete the entire PLUS Electronic MPN process in one session.  If you leave your computer unattended for 30 minutes, your login session will expire, and you will need to restart the process from the beginning.

HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO BEGIN THE PROCESS:

  • FAFSA PIN Number.  The PIN is an electronic access code number that serves as an identifier.  Even if you did not complete your FAFSA electronically, you should have received a PIN number mailing from the U.S. Department of Education website.  If you do not remember your PIN, please visit the official PIN website.
  • Valid e-mail address: To access your MPN on-line, you will need to create a username and password in ASA Direct.  An e-mail address is necessary for obtaining a username and password.
  • Two References: You will need the name, address and telephone numbers of two references with different U.S. street addresses.

STEP 1 – ESTABLISH A NEW USER ACCOUNT:

  • Type the following web address: http://www.amsa.com/direct/default.asp  and click on the FOR BORROWERS login button.
  • After accepting the “Conditions of Use”, click on the “New User?” link to create your User ID and password.
  • Check your e-mail account for an e-mail from autoReply@amsa.com.  Click on the hyperlink within the e-mail.  This hyperlink will bring you back to the ASA Direct login page.

Step 2 – E-SIGNATURE:

  • Once you have successfully logged into ASA Direct, the ASA Direct Welcome page will appear.  A list of your loans on file with American Student Assistance will appear on this page.  A Status Information and Action section is listed within the information displayed for each loan application.  Follow the link within this section that says “Please click here to download a copy or electronically sign your MPN.”
  • Click on the Missing Signature link to begin the process of electronically signing your MPN.
  • Review the Electronic Signature PLUS Master Promissory (MPN) Process Steps page, select the check box at the end of the page, and click on the Continue link.
  • A checklist is displayed at the Information Questionnaire screen; check each box to confirm that you have the software and hardware needed to complete the e-Sign process as well as a PIN from the Department of Education.  Important:  If you exit the e-Sign process and wish to complete your MPN electronically at a later time, you will have to restart the process.

  • Authentication through the National Credit Bureau:  This is not a credit check but will utilize your credit information in order to verify your identity.  Click on the I Agree link to proceed with the authentication process.  Once your identity has been verified, ASA Direct will provide you with a four-digit PIN that you will be asked to enter during the final step of the e-Sign process.  Please take note of this PIN, as you will not be able to complete the e-Sign process without it.

  • The Consumer Disclosure page explains that you are not required to electronically sign the MPN and that any time you may access a paper version of the MPN.  Read and confirm your agreement with the Consumer Disclosure, Privacy Act Notice, Borrower’s Rights and Responsibilities, Certifications and Authorizations, and MPN Terms and Conditions.

  • Select I agree to proceed with Electronic MPN.  Be sure to have the required hardware and software boxes checked, and click on Continue to proceed to the next step.

  • Review the Draft MPN page to make sure all information is correct.  Click on the checkbox next to I have read, understand, and agree to the information in the Draft MPN.  Click Continue to proceed to the next step.

  • Read the Promise to Pay section, and type your first and last name exactly as you provided it on the MPN.  This is your signature page.  By typing your name and clicking the Sign MPN and Continue link, you are electronically signing the MPN.  You may click Exit if you do not wish to sign the MPN.

  • Review the signed MPN and confirm your acceptance.  Before you can proceed to the next step, you must confirm that you have read the entire MPN.

  • Success!  At this point you have signed your MPN.  A message stating the status of your application will appear once you have completed the e-Sign process.  You may now print the signed MPN.
