How To…  E-Sign Your Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN)

Completing and “E-signing” your Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a quick and easy on-line process utilizing the American Student Assistance website and their ASA Direct web product.  American Student Assistance (SUNY Cortland’s loan processor/guarantee agency) offers an “E-signature” process that allows you to complete and legally sign your Stafford Loan MPN on-line.

HAVE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION TO BEGIN THE PROCESS:

    • FAFSA PIN Number.  The PIN is an electronic access code number that serves as an identifier.  Even if you did not complete your FAFSA electronically, you should have received a PIN number mailing from the U.S. Department of Education website.  If you do not remember your PIN, please visit the official PIN website.
    • Valid e-mail address: To access your MPN on-line, you will need to create a username and password in ASA Direct.  An e-mail address is necessary for obtaining a username and password.
    • Two References: You will need the name, address and telephone numbers of two references with different U.S. street addresses.
  • STEP 1 – ESTABLISH A NEW USER ACCOUNT:
    • Type the following web address: http://www.amsa.com/direct/default.asp  and click on the FOR BORROWERS login button.
    • After accepting the “Conditions of Use”, click on the “New User?” link to create your User ID and password.
    • Check your e-mail account for an e-mail from autoReply@amsa.com.  Click on the hyperlink within the e-mail.  This hyperlink will bring you back to the ASA Direct login page.
  • Step 2 – PROMISSORY NOTE COMPLETION:  In the next few steps you will be prompted to confirm the student loan lender you had previously selected in BannerWeb, complete all fields noted with an asterisk (*), and provide the two personal references.  Save the information.
    • Review the Electronic Signature Stafford MPN Process Steps page, select the check box at the end of the page and click on the Continue link.
    • At the Information Questionnaire screen check each box to confirm that you have the software and hardware needed to complete the E-sign process as well as a FAFSA PIN from the Department of Education.
    • Enter your FAFSA PIN to verify your identity.  Click on the Continue link to proceed with the authentication process. Enter your PIN, Social Security Number, Date of Birth and first two letters of your last name.
    • Read and confirm agreement with the next pages containing consumer disclosures, your rights and responsibilities, and MPN terms and conditions.
  • Step 3 – E-SIGNATURE:
    • Review the Draft MPN Page to make sure all of the information is correct.  Click on checkbox “I have read, understand, and agree to the information in the Draft MPN”. Click Continue to proceed to the next step.
    • Read the Promise to Pay and electronically sign the MPN by typing your first and last name exactly as you provided it on the Master Promissory Note. This is your signature page.
    • Review the signed MPN and confirm acceptance.
    • You’re finished!  It is strongly recommended that you print your signed MPN and keep the document with your important papers.
