Private Scholarships

The Scholarships below are sent to us by a variety of sources. Pay close attention to criteria, instructions and deadlines.

Alpha Sigma Lambda, Adult Education Foundation

  • Eligibility Criteria: At the time of application the student must have/be at least 24 years old, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, completed 30 credit hours at SUNY Cortland, currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at SUNY Cortland, and plans to enroll as an undergraduate student during the 2008-2009 academic year.
  • Award: $1,200 or $1,500.

Amherst Garden Club

  • Eligibility Criteria: Students pursuing two or four-year degree in accredited college/trade or technical school and majoring in conservation, environmental concerns, floriculture, forestry, horticulture, land management, landscape design, urban planning and or allied fields. To qualify, students must be a legal resident of Erie or Niagara Counties. Two references will be required in addition to a high school/college transcript. This scholarship is awarded based upon academic excellence, awards or achievements, character, initiative and experience, and financial need.
  • Award: $1,000. All monies awarded will be issued to the college bookstore for the purchase of educational materials as required by course design.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships

  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the Gilman International Scholarship students must be U.S.-citizen, undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education in the U.S..  All applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant, or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of study abroad, at the time of application. Students must be applying to a study abroad program eligible for undergraduate academic credit at their home university.
  • Award: Selected students will receive up to $5,000.

  • Deadline: Apply in the academic term prior to the start date of your study abroad program. If your program starts between July 15 and October 15, apply for the Fall cycle in April. If your program starts between December 15 and April 15, apply for the Spring cycle in September.

    The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The Institute of International Education (IIE) serves as the administrator of the Gilman Scholarship Program which is headquartered in IIE's Southern Regional Center n Houston, Texas.

John Gyles Education Awards

  • Eligibility Criteria: Available each year to students in both Canada and the United States. Full Canadian or American Citizenship is a reuirement. Awards are available to both male and female students for all areas of post secondary study. A minimum 2.7 GPA is required. Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process.
  • Award: Selected students will receive up to $3,000.

NYSTAA - New York State Transfer & Articulation Association Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria: Available to students who have sompleted an Associate in Arts, Associate in Science or Associate in Applied Science by August 2007 from a two-year member college. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. Plans to attend a four-year member insitution.

ROTC - Cornell

  • General Information: Cornell Army ROTC currently has $1.4 million available to offer SUNY Cortland students interested in 1.5, 2, 3 and 4 year full academic scholarships. This scholarship includes a monthly stipend ranging from $300/mo. for freshman to $500/mo. for seniors.  Additionally, the Cornell Army ROTC scholarship includes up to $900 each year to cover textbook fees.  Scholarships are available for any student who is a US citizen, meets US Army medical standards and academic and fitness criteria.

Dr. Ruth Schaub Education and Zonta Service Fund Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria: Adult woman (21+); resident of Cortland area; demonstrated financial need; enrolled in a certificate or degree program; essay explaining educational and career goals.

SUNY Financial Aid Professionals Student Scholarship

  • Eligibility Criteria: All students are eligible to apply.
  • Award: $1,000.

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund

  • Eligibility Criteria: Be a woman currently residing in the United States; be a woman who has earned a high school diploma or GED on or before September 1997; be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full- or part-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two-or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school; be attending the full 2007-2008 academic year and receiving a degree no earlier than May 2008; and have at least two semesters (24 credit hours or more) remaining to complete an undergradate degree as of the beginning of the 2007 fall academic term.
  • Award: Five $10,000 and fifty $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Information and Application: Available at all Talbots U.S. stores and on their website.
  • Deadline: January 2, 2007 but only the first 1,000 applications received will be processed.

Tau Sigma Scholarships
