Graduate Program Requirements

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE MAT: AEN PROGRAM
In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to a degree program stated in this catalog, the applicant for enrollment in the program leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching in Adolescence Education-ENG 7-12 (M.A.T.) should present the following:

1. At least a B average in undergraduate courses in English, Composition, or Comparative Literature.
2. A GPA of at least 3.0 in all undergraduate courses.
3. One year of college-level study or the equivalent of a language other than English. If this requirement has not already been met, the candidate may take language courses concurrently with graduate study.
4. Two letters of reference. Note: Letters from undergraduate professors teaching in the subject areas identified in #1 above are preferred.
5. A minimum of 33 hours of approved undergraduate courses in English, Composition, or Comparative Literature.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE M.S. Ed.: AEN PROGRAM
In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to a degree program stated in this catalog, the applicant for enrollment in the program leading to a Master of Science in Education degree in Adolescence Education-ENG 7-12 should present the following:

1. At least a B average in undergraduate English courses.
2. A GPA of at least 3.0 for all undergraduate courses.
3. One year of college-level study or the equivalent of a language other than English. If this requirement has not already been met, the candidate may take language courses concurrently with graduate study.
4. Two letters of reference. Note: Letters from English professors are preferred.
5. Provisional or initial certificate in adolescence English as a requirement for entry into the program.
6. A minimum of 33 hours of approved undergraduate courses in English, Composition, or Comparative Literature.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE M.A.: ENG PROGRAM
In addition to meeting the requirements for admission to a degree program stated in this catalog, the applicant for enrollment in the program leading to a Master of Arts degree in English should present the following:

1. At least a B average in undergraduate English courses.
2. At least a B cumulative average for all undergraduate classes.
3. A foreign language is desirable, but the requirement may be met concurrently with graduate study.
4. Approval of the Graduate English Committee.
5. Thirty-three hours of undergraduate literature or 27 hours of literature and six hours of study in the English language or linguistics.

Deadlines for Admission to MA Program:
Fall: July 1
Spring: December 1
Summer: April 1

Deadlines for Admission to the MAT/MSEd Programs:
For Fall: July 1
Note: These two programs, if taken on a full-time basis, are two-year sequentially based programs which begin in the fall semester. While a limited number of spaces might be made available for MSEd students who wish to begin in the spring, we discourage MAT candidates from applying for Spring admission. Deadline for Spring admission is December 1.

Also note: Application files must be complete (including the final transcript and notification of degree conferral) before the English Department will accept students into its programs.
