Curriculum Procedures and Process

SUNY Cortland Curriculum Change Guide

Procedures -- A Step by Step Approach to Develop a Proposal

  • Review Current Courses and Programs
Become knowledgeable about the curriculum in terms of what is needed or what has become outdated.

  • Consult with Colleagues
Speak with faculty in your department in reference to current trends in subject matter and pedagogy. Also consult with Enrollment Management and Career Services with regard to student patterns and employment potential.

  • Complete the Necessary Curriculum Forms
Assess the necessary forms and respond to the appropriate areas.

  • Submit the Needed Materials to the Department Curriculum Committee and/or the Department Chair/Program Coordinator

Process -- The Required Levels of Review

  • Consideration by the Department Curriculum Committee Chair and/or the Department Chair/Program Coordinator
Ideally, and with early consultation, this level of review should easily result in a recommendation to the next level of review.

  • Discussion at the School Curriculum Committee
For committee membership and meeting dates, refer to the appropriate web link as indicated by School – Arts and Sciences, Education, or Professional Studies. The School Curriculum Committee will:
    1. recommend proposals to the Dean
    2. table proposals for further deliberation
    3. return proposals for more information or about stated issues.

  • Consideration by the Dean
The Dean of the School may also return proposals in order to seek clarification or to indicate concerns. If recommending, the Dean forwards the proposal to either the College Curriculum Review Committee (C.C.R.C.) for undergraduate or to the Graduate Faculty Executive Committee (G.F.E.C.) for graduate programs.

  • Deliberation by the C.C.R.C. or the G.F.E.C.
The C.C.R.C. or the G.F.E.C., depending on undergraduate or graduate proposals, consists of members from across the College and represents a campus-wide perspective. Either committee has the same options as previous levels of review.

  • Review by the Teacher Education Council (T.E.C.) Curriculum Committee - only for proposals involving teacher preparation programs
If involving a teacher preparation program, and if recommended by the C.C.R.C. or the G.F.E.C., the T.E.C. Curriculum Committee must review.

  • Consideration by the Provost
After recommendation by the C.C.R.C. or the G.F.E.C. or by the T.E.C. Curriculum Committee, the Provost responds to the proposal. If approval is granted for an alteration to an existing course or a new course, that course appears in the next College Catalog and may be scheduled for the next academic year. If approval is granted for a new program or a new degree, the proposal must be forwarded to Albany.

  • SUNY System Review and State Education Department Registration
All new programs or degrees as well as all changes in teacher preparation areas must be approved by SUNY System. The proposal then must be approved and registered by the State Education Department before any publishing of or admission to the program.
