Academic Integrity at SUNY Cortland
Using the Works of Others
At the college and university level, students and faculty consult and use the creative and scholarly works of the artists, writers, and scholars who have gone before them. We use the work of others for information, for education, and for inspiration. As we study and learn, we are stimulated to create our own ideas and to give them voice by writing, drawing, painting, sculpting, blogging, researching and writing, speaking, singing and more. Drawing on the works of others, we gain insight and wisdom that leads to our own creations. Our creations, then, become part of the creative and scholarly works that future generations will view, read, discuss, and research.
As we seek to consult and use the work of others in our creative and academic pursuits, it is important to properly acknowledge the work of others. In doing so, we honor those who have worked hard to create a lasting impression. In addition to the moral and polite thing to do, it is the right thing to do as members of our institutions and citizens of our country and the world. There are laws and contracts in place to guard the rights of creators and authors.
Acknowledging the Work of Others
At SUNY Cortland, there are a variety of policies and procedures to help guide us in acknowledging the work of others in our projects, papers, websites, presentations, and portfolios.
- Copyright is the international laws and guidelines that frame our use of creative works in teaching, studying, and creating. Copyright law and local policies cover photocopying, digital copying, video and audio production, and performing.
- Academic Integrity is a philosophy that guides our behavior in our academic work. The Academic Integrity Policy of SUNY Cortland is a set of statements, policy and procedures that frame the use of scholarly and creative work by students.
- P2P, or, Peer-to-Peer File Sharing concerns the downloading, use, and sharing of files downloaded from the internet and other digital resource sites.
The appropriate use of information and resources is an important part of our everyday life as citizens, as students, and as educators. It is part of the excitement and joy of discovery as we teach, learn and create.
