Undergraduate Commencement

Caps/Gowns/Tassels

Caps and Gowns

To obtain a cap, gown and tassel, students should first apply to graduate using Banner Web by March 31. Applying for a degree (by the March 31st deadline) also allows a student's name to appear in the Commencement program.

Once at this location, do the following:

  1. Type in ID and password
  2. Select “Academic Services/Registrar”
  3. Select “Graduation and Commencement Menu”
  4. Select “Degree and Diploma Application”
  5. Print verification (students only need to print the verification if they have missed the March 31st deadline)

Once a student has applied for a degree, he or she may attend the “Grad Finale™”, an event on April 8, 2008 that allows students to purchase caps and gowns, tassels, diploma covers, flowers, Commencement announcements, class rings, diploma frames and other gift items relating to Commencement.

If a student has not applied for a degree, he or she may still attend the Grad Finale, however, while at the Grad Finale, students will be asked to officially apply to graduate before purchasing Commencement items.

Students who are unable to attend the Grad Finale may pick up tickets and purchase Commencement items at the College Store during regular business hours.

Students not on campus during the spring semester due to student teaching, study abroad, internships or other circumstances, may reserve a cap, gown and tickets by completing a Ticket, Cap and Gown Form. Students will need to provide their name, student I.D. number, size, height, contact information and indicate the ceremony in which they want to participate.

The College Store will not mail caps, gowns or tickets. Students must pick them up at the College Store prior to the Commencement ceremonies.

Students unable to pick up their packages must send someone to the College Store with a letter authorizing that person to pick up materials. The person picking up the Commencement package must produce a photo ID before any materials are released.

Students unable to designate someone to pick up the Commencement package prior to the ceremony should contact the College Store to place the order on hold. The College Store offers extended business hours the day of the ceremony to accommodate students who need to pick up their package. Please see the College Store hours listed below.

As a package deal the cap, gown, tassel, diploma cover and collar (for women) is $35.99 plus an additional 8.0% tax.

These items may also be purchased individually as follows:

Gown: $22.99

Cap: $5.99

Please note: Commencement is a formal ceremony, please dress accordingly. The general rule is light weight, non-restricting clothes. Men do not have to wear jackets, but should wear a shirt and tie. Students are requested not to wear shorts, overalls, sandals or sneakers.

Tassels

Tassels should be worn on the left side throughout the ceremony.

Students who qualify for an honors distinction based on their grade point averages recorded as of Feb. 1, 2008, will receive an honors tassel, which will be distributed by the Registrar’s Office at Commencement rehearsal and on Commencement day during lineup in Corey Gymnasium.

Honors distinctions are as follows:

Cum Laude               3.2 to 3.499         White Tassel
Magna Cum Laude    3.5 to 3.749         Red and White Tassel
Summa Cum Laude   3.75 and above    Red Tassel

Students not qualifying for honors distinction will wear a black tassel. However, if the student’s grade point average at the end of the academic year meets the honors criteria as noted above, the honors distinction will be recorded and displayed on the official transcript and diploma.

Various departments also have individual honors programs. The departments may distribute cords or tassels to wear during the Commencement ceremony as well. Students should inquire with department chairs or advisors to verify if there is a specific honors distinction for a major/program.
