         The Major

The Department of Biological Sciences at SUNY Cortland is offering a new major unique in the State University.  For the first time, in the Fall of 2004, we will offer a major in Biomedical Sciences.  This is one of the fastest-growing areas of modern biology and includes such areas as molecular genetics, genomics, bioengineering and bioinformatics, as well as the traditional medical fields.  We at SUNY Cortland want to prepare our students to be ready to ride the crest of a new wave in the biological sciences – to find careers in research or careers that use that research for the betterment of humankind.

Our new major offers a curriculum quite distinct from that of typical liberal arts biology majors.  First, it is more focused, including courses such as those concerned with developmental, physiological, anatomical and molecular biology.  Second, the biomedical sciences curriculum has distinctive elements, such as freshman and senior seminar courses and exciting internship opportunities at research institutions, pharmaceutical companies and hospitals.  Third, a variety of courses from outside our department provide pathways to diverse careers within the biomedical field.  These courses are offered by the Health, Exercise Science and Psychology Departments.  Thus, this major is uniquely crafted to provide a range of options to those of you who are particularly interested in the biomedical sciences.
