BIO 210: CELLULAR BIOLOGY

Students involved in the pH and Buffers Lab

Catalog Description:  BIO 210: CELLULAR BIOLOGY (A) Examination of the molecular and biochemical systems central to cellular structures and processes including organelles and some specialized cell types. Three lectures, one three-hour laboratory. Prerequisites: BIO 201-202, CHE 221-222. (4 cr. hr.)

Dr. SternfeldAdditional Information:  This course is taught both Fall and Spring semesters by Dr. Sternfeld and the laboratories are held in Bowers Hall 249.  This is generally a moderately sized class of mostly sophomores. There are two hour exams and the final plus lab reports and quizzes in lab.  The course can be taken as Writing Intensive.  A wide range of topics is covered in this course as you can see below and a general comment by students is that the course covers a great deal of material.

DNA moleculeLecture: The course is designed to progressively build levels of understanding.  The beginning of the course covers topics that pick up from chemistry courses - we look at the structure of "biological molecules".  This provides the background to understand both the interactions between molecules, including the function of enzymes, as well as the structure and function of membranes which are important to so many biological processes.  This knowledge is then built upon to understand to the processes that take place in cellular organelles.  Finally, we examine some specialized cell types which allows students to see how many of the functions previously studied work together.

Lab:  Many of the laboratory exercises reinforce the lecture topics and involve work with a large variety of equipment including microscopes, pH meters, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, electrophoresis and computers.
