Biography: I went to graduate school at the University of Washington and got a masters degree. My main focus was plant physiology. I got a completely unrelated job doing Mass spectrometry on proteins and peptides in core facility at UC Davis. I really like my job and still get to work with a few plant proteins here and there. http://msf.ucdavis.edu.  I live in California and have a massive garden with fruit trees, veggies and interesting ornamentals. I am also into running marathons!!
        9/21/08 Entry:
Since last updated UCD Molecular Structure Facility was absorbed in to the UCD Genome Center (Genome Center proteomics Core). I worked there doing the exact same things I was doing before it changed names. In December 2007 I quit working to stay home with my daughter Rose. This job is the toughest, most rewarding job I've ever had!

Occupation:  mechanical equipment operator.
Biography:  I was recently inspired by Debra DeGaray's letter in winter 2007 newsletter, so I decided to write (I always need some inspiration!! thanks, Debra - out of the woodwork NOW! - . I worked as a biological tech at Cornell until 1996 (awesome job but low pay), and then spent 4 or so years at Toshiba as a process controller (great money does not always equal a good job), then 2 years in computer networking (computers don't really like me!!).. The last 7 years I have been building a stone house (I'll have a snail mail pic to Dr. Sternfeld - I can't get my scanner to work!!it doesn't like me!!)- and working at the local highway highway department as an euipment operator - this is true -Big boys get BIG TOYS -(because it's close by, I had connections, and well mainly it adds to my retirement from Cornell at gives me time for the house) - YES that's true - I sometimes wonder how many wrong turns I must have made in life to get where I am, but I enjoyed the flora and fauna on the way - so what is really lost?
But 6 more years and I can retire (at 48), so it's ok, I designed, engineered, and built the house by myself - every stone for a grand total of about 500 Tons - Think TWICE if you are inspired to build your own house - it is by far the CRAZIEST thing I ever did!! BUT - the most satisfying accomplishment other than my Biol Degree. AND the house still needs windows, doors, and such - Yesterday I started with my first beehive - back on track to saving the world again. The bees are in trouble , they are dying fast- and who knows - just maybe I have the answer!! You never know what answers you have until you try to find them!! The flowers in my garden - well thanks to Dr. Waldbauer - I may never remember the common names, but I know the scientific names!! Now who says biology isn't fun? KEN

Occupation:  Senior Director, Scientific Affairs at Hanford Pharmaceuticals in Syracuse, NY
Biography: I started out after college as a Water Treatment Plant Operator at Bolton Point WTP in Ithaca. I found the job through the Biology Department at Cortland. In my 3 years there, I learned everything from laboratory testing and management to fixing water main breaks. We then relocated to Syracuse and I worked in an endocrine research lab at Syracuse University. I went from measuring in millions of gallons to microliters (just a few decimal places). From SU, I went to Upstate Medical Center's Infectious Disease Section in research for 3 years until the grant money ran out and I went to Hanford as a Microbiologist. In my 16 years there, I have been lucky enough to work my way up to the position I have now. The diverse education I received at Cortland has been a real asset in my career and in my life.

My son Matthew was born in '04 (a budding herpetologist - ask Dr. Janke to see the pictures). I finished my master's in summer '06, hiking along in the Adirondacks with Dr. Darling while 8 months pregnant with my daughter Natalie. I was granted tenure in Greene in '06, and am currently working on grant-writing skills with the goal of securing more technology for use in science classrooms in my district. I also am compiling materials to apply for the NASA Explorer Program for grades 4-9. I miss taking classes, and will probably take one of the few bio classes not yet taken at Cortland for "fun" next year.....I am interested in pursuing a PhD in the future, after both children are in school.
