Biography
2002 Entry: I have worked in a number of different places since graduating from Cortland. I worked for a year at Colgate Univ. as a lab tech, then on to Oxford for a year. I then worked for three years in the Auburn city school district and did some work at Cornell. I left Auburn to teach in Mexico for three years and have now been teaching in the Rome city Schools for the past four years. This past summer I wrote a course in Marine/Aquatic Science and piloted the program this past year. The researching and traveling was the best part of writing the new course. It was a huge success, I now have 160+ kids signed up for the coming school year and have brought in a collegue to help with some of the classes. The course would never have gotten off the ground however without the help of Sherry Boelhert and RoAnne Destito and a $10,000 grant. I feel that I owe my successes to my years at Cortland and the outstanding faculty. Thanks to everyone!
2005 Entry:  I am now in the 4th year of my marine biology/aquatic science course and things are going great. I am teaching just my course and doing the yearbook for RFA. I met my soul mate 5 years ago on Valentines day we made it official on christmas eve of 2003 on a beach in mexico. Hope that everyone is doing well.

Biography:
The summer after I left Cortland I began work on my Ph.D. in Biology at Syracuse University. My field is molecular biology and my dissertation involves further characterizing a retrotransposon (a type of mobile DNA element) that is found at telomeres in Drosophila melanogaster. The retrotransposon (along with a second retrotransposon) maintains the telomeres in Drosophila by adding new copies of itself to the telomeric DNA (Drosophila has no telomerase gene that has ever been identified).  Besides working on my dissertation, I also got married and now have two children (a son and a daughter). Needless to say, I don't do much else.

My next move was to Maine, where I attended a residency for Family Practice. I have been practicng in a rural area of central Maine since. I also spend lots of time with my two daughters.
When I started at Cortland, I was a health science major. Luckily, I had some great guidance and changed direction in my junior year. I feel very blessed that I like going to my job and that I have the gift of such a fullfilling career. Thanks.

Assistant Professor of Biology
Biography:
Having finished my B.S. in Biology with a Chemistry minor at Cortland, I pursued a M.S. Degree in Molecular Biology in Dr. John Doctor's lab at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. I then spent a year doing HIV research at the University of Pittsburgh in Dr. Ron Montelaro's Lab, which resulted in two publications. When I realized that research was not my “first love,” I left Pittsburgh to teach Biology at Penn State in Erie, PA. During my two years at PSU I worked both as a lecturer and lab coordinator for the Biology Department. I was also fortunate to write and publish three 1st edition lab manuals and two 2nd edition manuals. However, the research requirement of my job was still more than I cared to perform. I had finally found my true passion – teaching. Therefore, I left Penn State at the end of my contract and have accepted a position at Broome Community College where I am teaching Human Biology, Microbiology, and a non-majors course in Biological Weapons. I have also proposed the creation of a new A.A./A.S. degree in Biotechnology, which has been well received so far. Finally, I am currently attending Binghamton University in my free time as I work on my Ph.D. in Philosophy and Medical Ethics. Overall, I am very grateful for the support I received from the Biology Department at Cortland, especially from my advisor, Dr. John Straneva.
2006 Entry: Being from an ordinarily small town on a mostly harmless planet, I decided to see the world. So, I journeyed to my backyard with a field microscope. After years of research, I eventually attended a university where they gave me a master’s degree for studying small things. Now I spend my time traveling to new places with my microscope in a different university's backyard. I am particularly interested in biofilms. However, my intense scrutiny of these microbes has increasingly led me to feel that I may be invading their privacy. This concern led me to another university, where I earned my doctorate in medical ethics and philosophy of mind. Thus empowered, I am convinced that I can adequately defend the ethicality of my research against even the staunchest of microbial-rights proponents.  If you would like to learn more, you can visit me at: http://home.pct.edu/~bmckeon/.

Physics teacher
Biography
: When I first entered Cortland in 1975, I had no intentions of becoming a teacher. My advisor, Dr. Eugene Waldbauer, talked me into getting certified "just as a backup". As luck would have it, it's the only thing I have done since. I taught Biology for 1 year at Pine Bush High School, Pine Bush, NY. I then decided to come back upstate and taught a variety of science classes at South New Berlin Central School, South New Berlin, NY. By then it was time to get my Masters out of the way so I took a year's leave of absence and returned to SUNY Oneonta to get an M.S. in Secondary Science Education. At the same time, I completed the coursework to get permanently certified in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I then got a job teaching Physics at Sherburne-Earlville High School, Sherburne, NY. I took 5 years off to have my 2 children, then returned to the same Physics teaching position that I left. I still love teaching. The students are the best part of my job. I am now Department Chairperson in a wonderful science department of 10 teachers.

OccupationAssistant Professor of Biology
BiographyI taught at Washingtonville Junior High School in Washingtonville, NY for two years before attending NCSU for my master's degree. I met my husband at NCSU, and after he finished his Ph.D. in fisheries biology, we moved to Florida. I have been teaching at Gulf Coast Community College for the past 8 years!
I love reading about the biology faculty at Cortland State. You all did a great job preparing us for careers in biology. I aspire to do the same for my students!
2007 Entry:  I still teach at Gulf Coast Community College, and every year in the fall, I organize a community based seagrass monitoring program.  This program is tied to the water quality monitoring program the environmental group I am in coordinates.  I am always looking for new volunteers, so I was excited to meet two new interns that had just moved to the Panama City area.  One is working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the other is doing shark research at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries).  As I was talking to this intern from NOAA about scuba diving, he mentioned that he did his check out dives in a turbid, cold lake in upstate NY.  I asked if it was Skaneateles Lake and he looked surprised and said yes and then I asked him where he went to college.  Turns out he just graduated from Cortland State!  His name is Chris Berry ('07), and he helped me set up my buoys last weekend.  I am attaching a picture of us.  We're still quite wet as we just finished our work.  I know Chris is enjoying the warmer weather in Florida; he just moved from Alaska where he was doing another internship with the USFWS.  I think it's great that I am meeting Cortland alumni in Panama City!  I'll be doing more seagrass research in the future; maybe we can set up a program for students who want some field experience.
Hope everyone is well!
