OccupationAssistant Professor of Biology
BiographyI taught at Washingtonville Junior High School in Washingtonville, NY for two years before attending NCSU for my master's degree. I met my husband at NCSU, and after he finished his Ph.D. in fisheries biology, we moved to Florida. I have been teaching at Gulf Coast Community College for the past 8 years!
I love reading about the biology faculty at Cortland State. You all did a great job preparing us for careers in biology. I aspire to do the same for my students!
2007 Entry:  I still teach at Gulf Coast Community College, and every year in the fall, I organize a community based seagrass monitoring program.  This program is tied to the water quality monitoring program the environmental group I am in coordinates.  I am always looking for new volunteers, so I was excited to meet two new interns that had just moved to the Panama City area.  One is working with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the other is doing shark research at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries).  As I was talking to this intern from NOAA about scuba diving, he mentioned that he did his check out dives in a turbid, cold lake in upstate NY.  I asked if it was Skaneateles Lake and he looked surprised and said yes and then I asked him where he went to college.  Turns out he just graduated from Cortland State!  His name is Chris Berry ('07), and he helped me set up my buoys last weekend.  I am attaching a picture of us.  We're still quite wet as we just finished our work.  I know Chris is enjoying the warmer weather in Florida; he just moved from Alaska where he was doing another internship with the USFWS.  I think it's great that I am meeting Cortland alumni in Panama City!  I'll be doing more seagrass research in the future; maybe we can set up a program for students who want some field experience.
Hope everyone is well!

Biography: Since leaving Cortland I have been wandering, working odd jobs and seeing what I can see. I lived for a while in Washington and Oregon and discovered I love the Pacific Northwest. In 1996 I left the Pacific Northwest to see what the Far North was about, got a job on a commercial fishing boat... and although I didn't make a successful career out of fishing, Alaska got in my blood and I've decided to stay here. A few years ago I married a man with the last name of Leach. We didn't last long as a couple, but long enough for my last name to be changed on my Cortland records. I have returned to my maiden name of Campala. Somewhere along my travels I came up with the idea to change my first name. For years now I have been known as Avenue. It fits.  I hope my friends and acquaintances from Cortland are well and happy. Feel free to contact me.

Biography
: The summer after I left Cortland I took an invertebrate embryology course at the UW Friday Harbor Labs. It was a great course, in a beautiful environment. The following fall I started my graduate work in Sid Strickland's lab at SUNY-Stony Brook and completed my thesis "Analysis of Tissue Plasminogen Activator in the Mouse Oocyte" in 1993. From there I went on to my postdoc at the Oak Ridge Nat'l labs and worked in Rick Woychik's lab studying a mouse model of polycystic kidney disease.
My training as a molecular geneticist landed me a job at a biotech company called Amgen in the fall of 1996. Currently, I am in the neurosciences dept. running a program aimed at identifying therapeutic targets for Huntington's Disease.
Emily (Rinehart) and I have been married 11 years and have two kids, Maegan 5.5 and Conor 4. We enjoy the S. Ca life, but do sometimes miss the winter :) I've gotten into flyfishing and mt biking.
Many thanks to the professors (esp., J. Sternfeld) and friends at Cortland who got me interested in science.

:  What a great website!!
After Cortland I got married to Laura Hock (Cortland PE Major), and we went to Hahnemann University in downtown Philadelphia, PA and I received a Master's of Science degree in Physical Therapy. I then came back to Canandaigua, NY and practiced in a number of places over the past 10 years including Storng Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester.  Oh yeah, did I mention that we had 3 kids..... they didn't explain the biology behind this too well at Cortland. Brooke, Oliver, and Graham are the best things in the world and we have a great time running, biking, hiking, fishing and camping when we get the chance. For the past three years I have been on faculty at Nazareth College teaching (what tigers do best!). I hope to hear from other Cortland Biology Alumni out there (Bowers Hall Rules!). E-mail or write any time. We do have an excellent PT program and accept transfer students!!!!

Biography
2002 Entry: I have worked in a number of different places since graduating from Cortland. I worked for a year at Colgate Univ. as a lab tech, then on to Oxford for a year. I then worked for three years in the Auburn city school district and did some work at Cornell. I left Auburn to teach in Mexico for three years and have now been teaching in the Rome city Schools for the past four years. This past summer I wrote a course in Marine/Aquatic Science and piloted the program this past year. The researching and traveling was the best part of writing the new course. It was a huge success, I now have 160+ kids signed up for the coming school year and have brought in a collegue to help with some of the classes. The course would never have gotten off the ground however without the help of Sherry Boelhert and RoAnne Destito and a $10,000 grant. I feel that I owe my successes to my years at Cortland and the outstanding faculty. Thanks to everyone!
2005 Entry:  I am now in the 4th year of my marine biology/aquatic science course and things are going great. I am teaching just my course and doing the yearbook for RFA. I met my soul mate 5 years ago on Valentines day we made it official on christmas eve of 2003 on a beach in mexico. Hope that everyone is doing well.

Biography:  I was recently inspired by Debra DeGaray's letter in winter 2007 newsletter, so I decided to write (I always need some inspiration!! thanks, Debra - out of the woodwork NOW! - . I worked as a biological tech at Cornell until 1996 (awesome job but low pay), and then spent 4 or so years at Toshiba as a process controller (great money does not always equal a good job), then 2 years in computer networking (computers don't really like me!!).. The last 7 years I have been building a stone house (I'll have a snail mail pic to Dr. Sternfeld - I can't get my scanner to work!!it doesn't like me!!)- and working at the local highway highway department as an euipment operator - this is true -Big boys get BIG TOYS -(because it's close by, I had connections, and well mainly it adds to my retirement from Cornell at gives me time for the house) - YES that's true - I sometimes wonder how many wrong turns I must have made in life to get where I am, but I enjoyed the flora and fauna on the way - so what is really lost?
But 6 more years and I can retire (at 48), so it's ok, I designed, engineered, and built the house by myself - every stone for a grand total of about 500 Tons - Think TWICE if you are inspired to build your own house - it is by far the CRAZIEST thing I ever did!! BUT - the most satisfying accomplishment other than my Biol Degree. AND the house still needs windows, doors, and such - Yesterday I started with my first beehive - back on track to saving the world again. The bees are in trouble , they are dying fast- and who knows - just maybe I have the answer!! You never know what answers you have until you try to find them!! The flowers in my garden - well thanks to Dr. Waldbauer - I may never remember the common names, but I know the scientific names!! Now who says biology isn't fun? KEN
