PRE-PHYSICAL
THERAPY AT CORTLAND![]()
There is no "set undergraduate major" for careers in Physical Therapy (PT), but you do have to complete certain courses (i.e., prerequisites) during completion of an undergraduate degree program. Check out a couple PT schools you think you will apply to in the future, and look at their requirements (i.e., prerequisites), as well as their suggestions or recommendations for entrance into their graduate program in PT (DPT, Doctor of Physical Therapy). You can go to www.apta.org for a list a accredited programs - state-by-state. Keep in mind that the "science" you take in the DPT program is more like, but more advanced than, the "biology/science majors’ courses". That being said, some students get into DPT programs with "non-science majors’ science courses"; both types of courses are taught by the science departments. What courses are best to complete in a competitive market for getting into DPT schools ? There are no simple answer, because it is different for different DPT schools. So, be the best prepared you can be at the undergraduate level to go on to the graduate level. When in doubt, my simple suggestion is to always "major in what you would want to be" if you do not go on to a DPT program later. The future will still be there if you preform well at the first level. As such, SUNY Cortland offers four majors that can work as a Pre-PT plan of study; Biological Sciences or Biomedical Sciences, Kinesiology: Exercise Science, and Health Science: Allied Health Science. The Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences degrees prepare you for a 4 +3 program; 4 years for undergraduate degree at Cortland, and 3 years graduate degree at any DPT school of your choice (including Upstate Medical University).
