PRE-PHYSICAL
THERAPY AT CORTLAND![]()
The following is a "sample" program of study that you might follow at SUNY
Cortland for upper division transfer programs; for example, to
SUNY Health
Science Center at Syracuse or to other schools offering PT programs. This
"sample" is designed to complete all prerequisites in two years; however, the
majority of students simply incorporate these prerequisites into a typical four year
baccalaureate degree program with the flexibility to choose the Biological Sciences,
Health or Physical Education as your major.

1a. Bachelor's degree course.
1b. Accepts candidates for second Bachelor's degree.
2b. Certificate awarded to graduates already holding a bachelor's degree
in another field.
4. Accepts women only.
5. Entry-level Master's degree program.
Different PT programs have additional prerequisite course requirements.
You will take these "electives" as a part of your general education courses
and/or free electives, which might include literature, technical writing, public speaking,
philosophy, medical ethics, management, etc.
Entry-level Master's degree programs are becoming the preferred choice of many students;
therefore, your "electives" plus the completion of a baccalaureate degree at
SUNY Cortland will qualify you for these programs of study. For example, a degree which
includes the courses listed above plus COM 210 Fundamentals in Public Speaking, MGT 250
Principles of Management, and VAL 330 Introduction of Philosophical Ethics would fulfill
the additional requirements for Syracuse.
The
Kinesiology Department at Cortland offers a major in Athletic Training; some
students pursue Athletic Training and later enter a Physical Therapy program. A
student considering physical therapy may choose the Kinesiology Department's
degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science if they are
interested in the application of science as it relates human movement and
function. You might choose to major in the Biological Sciences where many of
the PT prerequisites are already a part of this science program. In yet another option,
you might select Health as your undergraduate major. Therefore, you have flexibility in
developing your educational background, while meeting the requirements for further study
in the field of Physical Therapy and/or Occupational Therapy; the requirements for
Occupational Therapy programs are very similar, and so is the career.
Applicants should have grades of "B" or higher in all courses required for
admission to be competitive. Volunteer experience in a physical therapy is required and
variety is preferred.
