        The Major

The main focus of the Department of Biological Sciences is the major in Biology.  Most students select the Biology Major as it offers the most flexible curriculum.  It has been designed to insure that students obtain a strong, comprehensive foundation in the central areas of biology and related sciences.  Our program also provides the opportunity for you to explore the wide range of disciplines in biology.

As one of the largest departments at Cortland, we are able to offer many courses in diverse areas of biology.  Biology courses offered for the major include 6 required courses and over 25 electives.  Together with a faculty advisor, you will design a course of study to investigate different areas of biology and if desired, concentrate in a specific area of interest whether that may be at the level of molecular, cellular, organismal or ecological biology.  You may wish to teach in junior high or high school, concentrate in environmental science or pursue a health-related career.  All of these possibilities – and much more – are open to you through the Cortland Biology Major.
