Lori Ellis graduated summa cum laude with a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Louisiana State University and magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in design from University of Michigan. Ellis¹ visual arts career includes 10 years of professional experience in design and art direction, as well as fine arts experience in many media. She has exhibited her paintings regionally and nationally since 1985. Her mission in teaching is to help students find their unique process of creative development, as well as understand their connection to the rich history of artists who came before them.

During her tenure at Cortland she has served as Department Chair, developed new program and course curriculum leading to SUNY Cortland¹s first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. She has also developed new curriculum for Painting I-IV, Drawing II-IV and Figure Drawing and in accordance with Title III grants, developed ongoing programs for Outdoor Education at Raquette Lake, Infusing Technology into the curriculum and Learning Communities.

Ellis has been a visiting artist and lecturer at Rollins College, Winter Park FL, Centre College Danville, KY and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Recent works are inspired by curiosity about the physical structure of the psyche and are in the form of large oil on canvas scrolls, a new form that accentuates the contrast between highly representational rendering and flattened picture plane. Ellis¹ work has been exhibited widely since 1985.

Recent exhibitions include The San Diego Art Institute¹s International Juried Exhibition and solo exhibitions at Bella Perla Gallery in Portland, Oregon's Pearl District.
