Welcome to the Africana Studies Department

Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary body of knowledge about Africa and the African Diaspora—the global dispersion of people of African descent—African Americans, Afro Caribbeans, Afro Asians, Afro Latinos, Afro Europeans, and the totality of African and Afrodiasporan human condition and contributions. Africana Studies exposes students to historical and contemporary problems, issues, and prospects for Africana people worldwide.

The Africana Studies Department at SUNY Cortland, building on the legacy of the African American Studies Program, provides a rigorous, post-colonial, and dynamic intellectual milieu to study the histories, arts, cultures, literatures, economics, political systems and organizations, and technologies of the Africana world. As a department, our mission is to educate all students through liberatory pedagogical approaches to develop productive communication and critical thinking skills in order to function effectively in a diverse society and the global village. Our faculty members look forward to our continued success working with the students at SUNY Cortland.
