Faculty Profile

Yomee Lee, Ph.D.
Associate Professor | Kinesiology Department | School of Professional Studies

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Professor Lee moved with her parents to South Korea at age five. Not until graduate school did she return to the United States, where she achieved her Ph.D. at Ohio State.

At SUNY Cortland, Professor Lee teaches sport sociology-related classes such as “Sport and Society,” “Women and Sport” and “Social Problems and Issues in Sport and Exercise,” where she touches on a range of culturally sensitive issues. She’s also a member and teacher of the campus activity group Africana Dance.

In 2007, Professor Lee was named one of 100 Female Future Leaders, a prestigious award from her alma mater, Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. And she returns to South Korea for her sabbatical year to study the Hines Ward Syndrome (named for the Korean-born, multi-ethnic Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl MVP), where she will examine changes in attitude toward racial identity in Korean society and teach “Introduction to Sociology in Sport in North America.”

“SUNY Cortland faculty love to teach. They’re excellent in the classroom and really passionate about their subjects,” says Professor Lee. “Faculty members also enjoy collaborating with students and with each other. We have such a variety of options for majors and lots of campus events and clubs, so students usually adjust well and can easily find someone to talk to when they need help.”
