Robert Darling Ph.D.
Professor | Geology Department | School of Arts and Sciences

Professor Darling believes students’ enthusiasm, motivation to work in the classroom and willingness to get involved in campus activities can be more important than their academic background.

“Even if you don’t know what you want to do for sure, this is the place to take a variety of courses, explore several areas and see what you find enriching,” says Professor Darling.

“We give you all of our attention. We want to know not only how you’re doing in your major subject, but how you’re adjusting to college life and what you’re thinking about for a career. While we offer extensive undergraduate academic research opportunities, we also care about your personal development.”

When he’s not in the classroom, Professor Darling and his geology colleagues lead field trips to the Adirondacks, the Catskills, northern Pennsylvania or the Brauer Education Center near Albany, N.Y., among other sites.

“Our students and alumni tell us that field trips are the most important part of our curriculum. It’s where we make personal and professional connections that last a long time. At SUNY Cortland, we’re really part of a wonderful extended family, and we encourage each other to succeed.”
