VPN Clients

What is a VPN Connection?

A VPN Connection stands for Virtual Private Network.  It will essentially create a private tunnel, through the internet which will securely transmit all of your data to the SUNY Cortland Network.

Why do I need this?

The VPN client will provide you with a secure connection back to campus, your off-campus or home computer will act and think it exists here on the SUNY Cortland campus network.  You can use Windows File Sharing, Outlook, and even VNC (or other remote control software).

What are the requirements?

  • Windows 2000/XP, Mac OS X
  • You will need to download and install the VPN software available from this web site.
  • YOUR OWN ISP (Road Runner, USA Datanet, Verizon DSL etc...).

Is my data safe?

Absolutely, the VPN software uses encryption (IpSec) to securely transmit your data from prying eyes.

Do I need to use this if I simply use Webmail?

No. If you are currently using Webmail, you do not need to download and install the VPN client.

What type of support is available?

We will support the VPN Concentrator necessary for connecting to campus.  We will provide VPN Client software for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista (32bit) and Mac OS X.  In all tested scenarios the installations have worked.  We will provide a best effort support in getting your machine to connect.  WE WILL NOT, service your computer on site, or at ANY drop off location.
