SUNY General Education Assessment Conference

Keynote Speaker:  Dr. Jeffrey Seybert, Director of Research, Evaluation, and Instructional Development, Johnson County Community College - "Reflections on 15+ Years of Assessment Experience"

On November 13-14, more than 180 participants gathered in Albany to share experiences from their first year of implementing SUNY-wide, campus-based assessment of general education. Most presentations from the conference are now available on this Web site.

General Information
Faculty and staff from across the State University of New York met on November 13-14 to share information, questions, and best practices regarding the first complete year of campus-based assessment of the General Education student learning outcomes on our campuses. Each campus in the University was invited to send members of their faculty, professional staff and administration who are playing a key role in the planning, implementation, and reporting of the assessment of student learning outcomes in General Education.  

The conference was sponsored by the General Education Assessment Review (GEAR) group and the Office of the Provost, with the support of the University Faculty Senate and the Faculty Council of Community Colleges. Overall, representatives from almost 30 campuses from across SUNY made oral or poster presentations at the conference.

Conference Objectives
In planning this conference, the GEAR Group identified a set of objectives for the GEAR Best Practices conference. Specifically, the conference was intended to:

  • Provide guidance and share approaches and solutions to assessment challenges;
  • Provide an opportunity for campuses to share experiences as they have implemented campus-based general education assessment;
  • Feature best practices for building a faculty infrastructure to support effective assessment;
  • Emphasize the effective utilization of assessment results, at both the system and campus levels;
  • Provide an opportunity to review the outcomes of the first year of campus-based general education assessment system-wide;
  • Provide an opportunity to discuss appropriate next steps in the assessment process;
  • Focus on ways that assessment results can be used to improve educational programs and the assessment process; and,
  • Provide understanding and specific examples of how assessment can help foster faculty dialogue and community-building. Keynote Speaker Information
    Jeff Seybert is currently Director of Research, Evaluation, and Instructional Development at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas (in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area). He has been in the Office of Institutional Research at JCCC for twenty-one years. Prior to his appointment at JCCC, Jeff served as assistant professor of psychology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Jeff holds a bachelor's degree in psychology (from Cal-State Long Beach), a master's degree in public administration (from the University of Missouri-Kansas City) and master's and doctoral degrees in experimental psychology (from the University of Oklahoma). He is past president of the National Council for Research and Planning and the MidAmerica Association for Institutional Research, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR). Jeff serves as consulting editor for the Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, The AIR Professional File, and consulting editor and contributing columnist for Assessment Update. He has written numerous articles and book chapters and served as consultant to more than 100 colleges, non-profit, and other organizations in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and the Caribbean in the areas of assessment of student outcomes and institutional effectiveness, program evaluation, planning, and institutional research.

    The GEAR Group was pleased that six companies that have been greatly involved in educational assessment were represented at the November Best Practices Conference. Each vendor made a presentation as part of the conference program, and attendees also had the opportunity to speak to representatives from each company throughout the conference.
