Doctoral work focused on mucociliary transport in the trachea (supported by Grant HL-16730 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of N.I.H). Mucus clearance rates were measured in vitro and a novel methodology was developed for the measurement of viscosity, elasticity and adhesiveness of mucous secretions. The objective of this work was to define mechanisms involved in the autonomic modulation of mucociliary clearance.
Subsequent research activities at SUNY/Cortland are shared with co-authoring students and involve the study of histochemical changes in tracheal glands and in the pH of tracheal mucus following pharmacological stimulation in several animal models.
Current research is carried out in liaison with the Surgery Department at SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine at Syracuse, and involves the development of an animal model for the study of Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). The work at Syracuse entails the surgical instrumentation of a porcine sepsis model, while the subsequent histometric evaluation of lung tissues is done at Cortland. The research team includes Cardiopulmonary Surgeons, Surgery Residents and Research Scientists from the College of Medicine, and the work closely parallels ARDS as it occurs in patients at the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital.
